BMO Assistant Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how BMO Assistant ("BMO", "we", "our") processes data when you use the BMO Chrome extension and related services. BMO is designed to provide an in-browser AI assistant overlay that helps users summarize, understand, and draft content from web pages.
1. Data We Process
BMO may process the following categories of data:
- Extension settings and state: feature toggles, panel state, model preferences, and local voice server URL.
- User-provided inputs: chat prompts and any files or notes you intentionally provide as context.
- Active page context (user-triggered): page title, URL, selected text, and clipped visible page text captured when you submit a prompt.
- Speech inputs (optional): microphone speech recognition content when you use voice input.
- Audio outputs (optional): synthesized speech playback content for assistant responses.
2. How We Use Data
- Generate AI responses requested by you.
- Provide context-aware summarization and drafting features.
- Maintain extension functionality across tabs and sessions.
- Support optional speech input/output and local voice integrations.
3. Legal Basis / User Control
BMO processes data only to provide requested functionality. Most data processing is initiated by your direct interaction (for example, sending a message, enabling voice, or uploading context files). You can disable features and clear local data at any time.
4. Data Storage
- BMO stores extension state and settings in
chrome.storage.localon your device. - Data submitted to third-party AI providers is processed under those providers' policies.
5. Third-Party Services
Depending on your configuration, BMO may send user prompts and page context to AI APIs (such as OpenAI) to generate responses. These providers may process data according to their own privacy terms and retention policies.
6. Permissions Explained
storage: save user settings and extension state.activeTab: interact with the currently active tab when user enables BMO.scripting: inject packaged content scripts required for overlay functionality.host permissions: allow operation on user-visited pages where BMO is enabled.
7. Data Sharing
We do not sell personal data. Data is shared only with service providers necessary to deliver core functionality (for example AI inference and optional voice services), or when required by law.
8. Data Retention
- Local extension data remains until you clear extension storage, remove uploaded context data, or uninstall the extension.
- Third-party processing retention is governed by the external provider's policy.
9. Security
We take reasonable measures to protect data in transit and at rest. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Children's Privacy
BMO is not intended for children under 13 (or equivalent age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
11. International Users
If you use BMO outside your home country, your data may be processed in other jurisdictions depending on selected service providers.
12. Your Choices
- Disable BMO at any time via extension controls.
- Disable speech features in Settings.
- Remove uploaded context files in Settings.
- Uninstall the extension to remove local extension data.
13. Policy Updates
We may update this policy to reflect product or legal changes. The effective date at the top will indicate the latest version.
